Foam & Fabric Backing
Foam and fabric backing for improved strength, comfort and durability
Why back fabric with foams and films?
For 60+ years, we've backed fabrics to offer the manufacturing industry the benefits of increased strength, added comfort, more durability, and ease of use.
Increased Strength
To increase strength, we use different GSM weight materials, such as denier, to create a stronger product suitable for the upholstery and wall covering markets.Added Comfort
For added comfort, we add a thin foam membrane backing to the fabric, making it more comfortable for sofas and task chairs while also adding value to the product.A More Durable Product
Our film backings, such as Cerex and Two way stretch, make the fabric more durable, outperforming non-backed market equivalents and extending the lifespan of products.Workability and Ease of Use
Backed fabrics offer greater staple and upholstery strength, while also providing an easy to slip service when working with covers, making them more workable and easier to use.Cerex backing - improves your fabric properties

Cerex PBN II is a line of spunbond nylon products that are made by spinning continuous filaments of nylon 6,6 into a soft, comfortable fabric that is thermally bonded. Cerex's durability and gentle texture make it highly adaptable and versatile for many uses.
In particular, Cerex backing is especially useful in applications that require a smooth backing on fabrics and foam. It creates an easy-to-sew surface that decreases the likelihood of thread ripping through the material.
Cerex backing is a multi-functional and affordable material that can be utilised in a wide range of applications, making it a popular choice in various industries such as automotive, apparel, home furnishings, medical, and mould release. Cerex backing provides many advantages, making it an ideal choice for many purposes.

The Advantages of Cerex Backings are:
- One of the toughest and most durable man-made polymers
- High tensile and tear strength even at low fabric weights
- Extreme thermal stability and high melting point
- Resistant to most chemicals, solvents, alkaline and acids
- Excellent in uniform and high-quality applications
- Thermally bonded for a soft and drapable fabric
Cerex Backings can be used for:
- Automotive: backing for smooth and easy-to-sew fabrics and foam
- Apparel: provides structure and durability for lightweight and sheer fabrics
- Home Furnishings: prevents stretching or tearing and provides stability for upholstery fabrics
- Medical: acts as a barrier material in surgical drapes, gowns, and masks
- Mould Release: used to prevent sticking in the manufacturing of composites and plastics
Denier backing - an inexpensive solution
20 denier nylon is a budget-friendly, transparent option that is commonly used in costume, fashion, and event design applications.
The tricot open weave backing serves as a protective layer between the foam and adhesive, reducing the risk of excessive adhesive spray.
Denier, defined as the weight of fiber in grams per 9000 meters, can be used to determine the strength and thickness of a fabric. Higher denier measurements typically indicate a thicker and more durable fabric, while lower denier measurements suggest a softer and silkier texture. For example, ultralight fabrics, like those made with 20d thread, are frequently used to reinforce other fabrics, such as headlining.
Upon request, a stronger, more stable 40 denier fabric is also available.
Tricot fabric does not stretch in length, but it does offer a stretch of 10%-15% in width.

Denier backings are versatile, providing strength and support.
- Outdoor gear: Denier backings are commonly used in the construction of tents, backpacks, and other outdoor equipment that requires durability and water resistance.
- Upholstery: Denier backings are often used as a base layer for upholstery fabrics, providing additional support and structure.
- Automotive interiors: Denier backings can be found in the construction of car seats and headliners, providing a durable and stable base for the interior fabric.
- Luggage: Denier backings can be used in the construction of suitcases, duffle bags, and other travel gear that needs to withstand wear and tear.
- Medical textiles: Denier backings can be used in the construction of medical textiles, such as bandages or surgical gowns, to provide additional strength and durability.
